New Health Benefits Clinically Validated for Pomegranate: Anti-Diabetes

A new study has found that pomegranate may make for an ideal functional food for diabetics, and may contain key compounds which could be developed into anti-diabetic agents likely with a far higher safety and efficacy profile than many of today's blockbuster diabetes drugs, which havedeadly side effects.
The new study was published in the journal Nutrition Research and is the first of its kind to clinically validate the health benefits of pomegranate for type 2 diabetics; a category of patients, mind you, who have been made to reflexively shun 'sugar rich' foods, including fruits, for decades -- thanks to the misguided advice of health professionals who didn't know better, then, but should probably know better now.  
While pomegranate is rich in carbohydrate (arguably the #1 dietary enemy of high blood sugar), and predominantly with the fruit sugar fructose, it is like most whole fruits – packed with antioxidants, fiber, and the nutritional 'checks and balances' - that keep the sugar per se from doing harm. In fact, according to the new study, the pomegranate and the fresh pressed juice of its seeds, significantly benefits type 2 diabetics.
In the new study, just one dose of pomegranate juice administered to a group of mixed sex and age type 2 diabetics who had fasted for 12 hours resulted only 3 hours later in decreased insulin resistance, decreased fasting blood glucose, and an enhancement of β-cell function, the critical cells in the pancreas required to produce insulin, in the majority of them (~79%). The benefits decreased both with higher age and those who pre-intervention had the highest fasting blood sugar.
The study methodology and results were summarized as follows:
"Blood samples from 85 participants with type 2 diabetes were collected after a 12-hour fast, then 1 and 3 hours after administration of 1.5 mL of pomegranate juice, per kg body weight. Serum glucose was measured based on standard methods using the BS-200 Chemistry Analyzer (Shenzhen Mindray Bio-Medical Electronics Co Ltd, Shenzhen, China). Commercially available immunoassay kits were used to measure human insulin. Generally, the results demonstrated decreased fasting serum glucose (FSG), increased β-cell function, and decreased insulin resistance among type 2 diabetes participants, 3 hours after PJ administration (P < .05). This hypoglycemic [blood sugar lowering] response depended on initial FSG levels, as participants with lower FSG levels (7.1-8.7 mmol/L) demonstrated a greater hypoglycemic response (P < .05) compared with those who had higher FSG levels (8.8-15.8 mmol/L). The effect of PJ was also not affected by the sex of the patient and was less potent in elderly patients."
The study concluded: "[T]his work offers some encouragement for type 2 diabetes patients regarding pomegranate consumption as an additional contribution to control glucose levels."

These results dispel a prevailing myth regarding the belief that fruits and their 'sugar' – fructose -- always represent a threat to the health of diabetics and that foods comprised largely of carbohydrates and are not sweet to the taste – e.g. bread, pasta, cereal – are safer, if not sometimes claimed to be beneficial. As in literature, a text without a context is a pretext. The same can be said for isolated 'nutrients.' Take them out of their context as 'whole food' and they behave more like chemicals. Fructose in insolated form shouldn't even be called 'fruit sugar.' Indeed, so much of it is produced from GMO corn (e.g. high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)), that indeed, it is isn't from fruit at all. The science clearly shows that isolated fructose is highly toxicextremely addictive, and capable of inducing diabetes (diabetogenic). However, when complexed in whole food form, bound up with fiber, antioxidants, and hundreds of other naturally occurring biomolecules, real 'fruit sugar' does not exhibit the type of toxicity associated with the isolated or semi-synthetic fructose (e.g. (we have indexed 80 distinct adverse effects of fructose so far!)
Second, while a carbohydrate rich food, such as toast or puffed rice, is not sweet to the taste (or, not nearly as sweet as 'sugar), only minutes following ingestion, it can make your blood far sweeter than an equivalent carbohydrate load from fruit, and even isolated sugar.  Due to the perspectives opened up by the glycemic index, the insulin index, and the glycemic load, it is no longer sufficient to simply count carbs by weight or caloric content in order determine its varied physiological effects post-consumption.  For this reason I like to call non-sweet, grain-derived carbohydrates: "hidden sugar, crouching diabetes."
Last year, in an article titled, "Fruit Restriction Advice for Type 2 Diabetics Proven WRONG," we reported on a recent study that found that type 2 diabetics saw no benefit from avoiding fruits; to the contrary, "those who ate more fruit had slightly more weight loss and lower ending waist circumference than those who ate less fruit."
Of course, this finding does prove in and of itself that fruit possesses 'diabetes neutral' or anti-diabetic properties, as these observations could be due to the confounding variable that diabetics who satisfy a sweet tooth with fruit may be less inclined to reach for a bagel or grain-based snack instead, the latter of which has virtually no anti-oxidant activity when compared to fruits in their whole, non-pasteurized and presumably organic forms. Diabetics, after all, do not suffer morbidity and mortality directly from elevated blood sugar, rather, from the secondary complications associated with oxidized excess blood sugar and all the downstream adverse effects this process associated with glycation and subsequent production of highly toxic advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), which can do mortal harm to the body by damaging proteins, lipids and sugar-based structures on the surface of our cells. This is why the measurement of glycated hemoglobin (A1C) is so much more indicative of a diabetics' true state of health than the one-dimensional snap shot offered by blood sugar tests.
Because most fruits, especially non-hybridized 'wilder' varieties, when not processed, cooked, or produced with pesticides and non-organic farming practices (which have been found to reduce the potent polyphenols found naturally in organically grown produce), have profound antioxidant activity, they may directly contribute to helping mitigate one of the primary problems associated with diabetes: high levels of oxidative stress and associated inflammation.
Eating this type of high quality produce will directly mitigate a wide range of pathological processes that take hold in the diabetic body, especially one saturated with antioxidant poor, or worse, pro-oxidative processed, cooked, food additive-laden grain derived foods.
Indeed, the study identified pomegranate's potent antioxidant properties as likely responsible for most of the observed beneficial properties. These include direct antioxidant properties as well as the up-regulation of the production of our body's own (endogenous) antioxidant systems, (e.g. paraoxonase-1, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione reductase).
The study also identified several other potential mechanisms for pomegranate's anti-diabetic properties which include:  
  • Pomegranate reduces the formation of a signaling molecule (resistin) that is known to be secreted by the fat cells (adipocytes) and which is increased when fat cells are increasing in number. 
  • Pomegranate may modulate cellular transcription factors in a beneficial way (i.e., nuclear factor κB and peroxisome proliferator–activated receptor γ).
  • Pomegranate may chelate (bind up) calcium ions that have been observed to be expressed in high levels in the fat cells of patients with type 2 diabetes. This may result in increased insulin sensitivity.
Ultimately, science can only give us a glimpse at the mechanisms involved in any natural substances ability to stimulate healing within the human body. The mechanistic explanations will only go as far in making things intelligible within the framework of our understanding of the body as a 'biomachine.' Yet, this is only one 'integument in the onion' of our body/soul/spirit.  Ultimately, experiencing healing, nourishment and the sensation of 'it working' is a form of knowing that has greater value than the science itself will ever convey. কোমরব্যথার কারণ ও করণীয়

শুধু বয়স্ক মানুষই নয়, বিভিন্ন অভ্যাসের কারণে তরুণরাও এই সমস্যায় ভুগতে পারেন।

জেড. এইচ সিকদার উইমেন্স মেডিকাল কলেজের ফিজিওথেরাপি বিভাগ এবং পিপলস পেইন ফিজিওথেরাপি অ্যান্ড রিহ্যাবিলিটেশন ক্লিনিকের প্রধান কনসালটেন্ট ডা. শিবলী নোমানী জানান, ডাক্তারি হিসাব অনুযায়ি শতকরা ৮০ ভাগ মানুষই তার জীবনকালে একবারের জন্য হলেও কোমরব্যথায় আক্রান্ত হয়ে থাকেন। ৪০ থেকে ৫০ বছর বয়সেই এই সমস্যায় আক্রান্ত হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা বেশি। তবে তরুণরাও আশঙ্কার বাইরে নন। ডাক্তারি ভাষার এই সমস্যাকে বলা হয় এলবিপি (লো ব্যাক পেইন)।

দৈনন্দিন জীবনযাত্রা, বয়সের সঙ্গে শরীরের হাড় ও মাংসপেশির ক্ষয় ইত্যাদির কারণেই মূলত কোমরে ব্যথা হয়ে থাকে। থাকতে পারে বিভিন্ন জন্মগত সমস্যাও।

কোমর ব্যথার কারণ সম্পর্কে ডা. নোমনী বলেন, “বেশিরভাগই দৈনন্দিন জীবনযাত্রার বিভিন্ন অভ্যাসগত ভুলের কারণে এই রোগে আক্রান্ত হন। এদের মধ্যে আছে শরীরের ক্ষমতার তুলনায় অতিরিক্ত কাজ করা, ভারি জিনিসপত্র ওঠানো-নামানোর ক্ষেত্রে অসাবধানতা, বেশিক্ষণ চেয়ারে বসে থাকা, শরীরে প্রয়োজনীয় পুষ্টির অভাব ইত্যাদি।”

তিনি আরও বলেন, “কোমরের হাড়ের গঠনগত জটিলতার কারণেও কোমরব্যথা হতে পারে। এছাড়াও স্পাইনাল টিউমার, হেমাঞ্জিওমা, কিডনিতে পাথর, গলব্লাডারে পাথর, ইউরিনারি ও গাইনোকোলজিকাল সমস্যা ইত্যাদি প্যাথলজিকাল কারণেও কোমরব্যথা হয়ে থাকে।”

জন্মগতভাবে কোমরের হাড়ের গঠনগত জটিলতাগুলোর মধ্যে দুটি সমস্যার কথা বলেন এই চিকিৎসক। ‘স্পাইনাল বাইফিডা’ এবং ‘লাম্বার সেক্রালাইজেশন’।

তিনি বলেন, “কোমরের হাড়ের কোনো একটি অংশ সঠিকভাবে জোড়া না লাগাকে ডাক্তারি ভাষায় বলা হয় স্পাইনাল বাইফিডা। এবং লাম্বার সেক্রালাইজেশন হল মেরুদণ্ডের পাঁচ নম্বর হাড়ের ট্রান্সভার্স প্রসেস সেক্রামের সঙ্গে লেগে যাওয়া।”

“এছাড়াও মেরুদণ্ডের হাড়গুলোর মাঝখানের ফাঁকা স্থানগুলো চেপে যাওয়ার কারণেও কোমরে ব্যথা হতে পারে। হাড়ের মাঝখানের এই ফাঁকা স্থানগুলো ডাক্তারি ভাষায় বলা হয় ‘ডিস্ক’। আর এই সমস্যাকে বলা হল ‘ডিস্ক কলাপস”, বললেন ডা. নোমানী।

দৈনন্দিন জীবনযাত্রার অভ্যাসগত ভুলগুলো সম্পর্কে ডা. শিবলী নোমানী বলেন, “দীর্ঘ সময় চেয়ারে বসে থাকা কোমরব্যথা হওয়ার একটি বড় কারণ। অনেকেই মনে করেন শক্ত কাঠের চেয়ারে কিংবা নরম গদিযুক্ত চেয়ারে বসলে কোমরব্যথার হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা কমে। তবে এই ব্যথা এড়ানোর জন্য পিঠে হেলান দিয়ে বসাই বেশি জরুরি।”

তিনি পরামর্শ দিতে গিয়ে বলেন, “এক্ষেত্রে যেসব চেয়ারের হেলান দেওয়ার অংশটি বাঁকানো সেসব চেয়ার ব্যবহার করা দরকার। আর অতিরিক্ত নরম গদিযুক্ত চেয়ারে বসলেও কোমরের ক্ষতি হতে পারে। এজন্য পাতলা গদির চেয়ারে বসতে হবে।”

দীর্ঘ সময় ধরে মোটরসাইকেল চালানো, এক কাঁধে ব্যাগ বা ভারি কিছু বহন করার কারণেও কোমরে ব্যথা হওয়ার আশঙ্কার কথা জানালেন ডা. শিবলী নোমানী। হাঁটার সমস্যার কারণেও কোমরব্যথা হতে পারে।

এ বিষয়ে তিনি বলেন, “প্রত্যেকটি মানুষেরই হাঁটার একটি ধরণ থাকে। কেউ সামনে ঝুঁকে হাঁটেন, কেউ আবার একপাশে বাঁকা হয়ে হাঁটেন। এ অভ্যাসগুলো পরিবর্তন করার চেষ্টা করতে হবে। হাঁটার সময় শরীর সোজা রাখতে হবে। এছাড়া একটানা বেশিক্ষণ জোরে হাঁটা উচিত নয়। উঁচুনিচু স্থানে ওঠানামা করার সময় সাবধানতা অবলম্বন করতে হবে।”

কোমরব্যথার ঝুঁকি কমাতে চর্বিযুক্ত খাবার এড়িয়ে চলার পরামর্শ দিলেন তিনি।

তার কথায়, “শরীরে চর্বি জমে যাওয়ার কারণে ওজন বেড়ে যায়। এতে কোমরের উপর চাপ পড়ে। ফলে কোমরের হাড় বেঁকে যেতে পারে।”

ওজন নিয়ন্ত্রণে রাখার জন্য প্রতিদিন ১০ থেকে ১৫ মিনিট ব্যায়াম করার পরামর্শ দেন ডা. নোমানী।

তিনি বলেন, “নিজেকে প্রতিদিন ১০ থেকে ১৫ মিনিট সময় দিন। এই সময়ে সাধারণ ব্যায়ামগুলোর মাধ্যমে শরীরে মাংসপেশিগুলো প্রসারিত করার অভ্যাস গড়ে তোলার চেষ্টা করুন।”

কোমরব্যথায় আক্রান্ত হলে করণীয় সম্পর্কে ডা. শিবলী নোমানী বলেন, “প্রথমবারের মতো ব্যথা হলে অবহেলা না করে বিশ্রাম নিতে হবে। কোমরে গরমভাপ দিলে উপকার পেতে পারেন। কোমরব্যথার বিভিন্ন মলম ব্যবহার করতে পারেন। তবে মালিশ করা যাবে না। ব্যথা তিন দিনের বেশি স্থায়ী হলে অবশ্যই একজন ফিজিওথেরাপিস্ট কিংবা নিউরোলজিস্টের পরামর্শ নিতে হবে।”

This Homemade Recipe Will Heal Painful Joints After The First Use

Joints pain especially in knees, shoulders and elbows is a side effect of getting old if you are over 40. But sometimes this pain can occur among younger people and it is not because of the age, but it is rather because of arthritis, rheumatism, fractures, overload, or trauma. There are many pills and ointments which promise to reduce the pain, but no matter how long you use them, the pain is back. Luckily, there is a natural recipe which will help you remove the pain after its first use. It comes from the Russian folk medicine and is being prepared from simple ingredients which we all have in our kitchens.

  • 1 tbsp. of honey;
  • 1 tbsp. of mustard;
  • 1 tbsp. of water;
  • 1 tbsp. of fine salt.
How to prepare it: mix all the ingredients thoroughly until it becomes a homogeneous mixture and then place it in an empty box of hand cream or some other packaging.
Application: put some of the mixture on the painful place, put a plastic bag over it and tie with a warm scarf made of wool. Hold for 1.5-2 hours. This is best before going to bed so that the joints can rest after the treatment. In the morning wash the place. Repeat the sessions 4-5 days, and only after the first treatment you’ll feel improvements and effects. When needed repeat it. You’ll be able to use the mixture for couple of days, so keep it in the fridge. If the pain returns after some time, make a new mixture and apply.
Mustard is good for other things as well: it is made from herbs mustard or heartburn and is also good if you get burned. Only apply a thick layer and the pain will disappear. Also, if you have a headache, apply some mustard on the forehead and the temples. Moreover, if you catch a cold or have a scratchy throat, swallow 1 tsp of mustard.
